Bernard MeisnerFeatured speaker for the South Plains Genealogical Society regular meeting Nov. 9 will be Bernard N. Meisner, Ph.D. He will address the topic "Other Census Records."  Meisner is a genealogist and lecturer based in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. He began researching his family more than 25 years ago and enjoys sharing lessons learned from those experiences, including his mistakes. Although he knew only one grandparent (his maternal grandfather), he has successfully identified all of his great-great grandparents and several triple- and quadruple-great-grandparents. In the past three years, he has completed courses in German and Irish research at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh. He has served as president and social media chair of the Mid-Cities Genealogical Society, and is a member of the National Genealogical Society and the Texas State Genealogical Society.

Randall MerriottIn observance of Black History Month, the program of South Plains Genealogical Society's meeting February 8 will focus on WikiTree’s U.S. Black Heritage project.
Presenter Randall Merriott is a Lubbock native who owns and operates Irrigation Dynamics in Lubbock. He became interested in genealogy through a series of notebooks "left to me by my paternal grandmother, Deola Wenner Merriott." Merriott reports "she did genealogy the old fashioned way, by writing letters and visiting courthouses and cemeteries."
As he researched his own ancestors who had settled in parts of Texas, New Mexico and Arkansas, Merriott found names he recognized among members of the Buffalo Soldiers who had traveled Texas and the South Plains. Merriott is the manager of a WikiTree entry on the "Buffalo Soldier Tragedy of 1877" also known as the "Staked Plains Horror."
